How to generate a project with Draftlytic's AI PRD generator

Turn a one-line idea into a structured, editable project spec in minutes. Smart AI questions, then a brief ready for Cursor, Lovable, or Bolt.

What it is

Draftlytic's AI PRD generator takes a rough idea and turns it into a structured spec you can hand straight to Cursor, Lovable, Bolt, Windsurf, or any other AI coding tool. No blank-page paralysis, no formatting fuss — just describe what you want to build and the AI does the rest.

The output is a real project with a name, a plain-English overview, and a prioritized feature list split into must-have, nice-to-have, and future items. Depending on what you tell the AI, it can also fill in platform, tech stack, target audience, data model, design tokens, navigation, auth, and constraints sections automatically. Everything is editable after the fact, so you can tweak the plan before you start coding.

Use this flow any time you have a new idea and want a solid brief before touching any code. The free tier lets you try the full flow once, so you can see exactly what you get before committing to a paid plan.

Step by step

  1. Open a new project from the Dashboard

Log in and head to your Dashboard. Click the New project button to start the creation flow. If you are on the free tier and have already used your one project slot, you will be prompted to upgrade before you can continue.

  2. Describe your idea

Type a description of what you want to build into the text area. The more context you give — target users, the core problem, any tech preferences — the more useful the questions and the final spec will be. You have up to 15,000 characters, but a focused paragraph is usually enough to get great results.

  3. Pick a depth level

Below the text area, choose Brief, Standard (default), or Detailed using the depth selector. Brief and Standard both cost 50 credits and produce a complete spec. Detailed costs 65 credits and adds testable acceptance criteria on must-have features, HTTP API routes on every screen, and richer tech-stack and data-model detail. Detailed depth is available on Plus and Pro plans only — the option is locked with a padlock icon if your tier does not include it.

  4. Answer the clarifying questions

After you click Continue, the AI generates a short batch of clarifying questions covering categories like platform, revenue model, and target audience. Questions are presented one at a time as multiple-choice cards — pick from the options, select multiple where allowed, or type a custom answer. You can skip any question and come back to fill it in later with AI Edit. Once the first round is complete, Draftlytic may offer an optional extra round of questions to flesh out lower-coverage categories; each extra round has its own small credit cost shown before you commit.

  5. Generate the spec

When you are ready, click Skip & Generate from any active question card, or Generate now from the end-of-round screen. You do not have to answer every question first. The AI builds your spec in the background, usually in under a minute, and shows a live progress indicator while it works. If something goes wrong you can retry without being charged again, or cancel and get a full refund.

  6. Name your product

Once generation completes, Draftlytic shows a naming screen with a suggested project name based on your spec. You can keep the suggestion or type your own. This name is also used if you generate a logo later, so it is worth getting right — though you can change it any time.

  7. Review and edit your spec

You land on the project detail view where your full spec is laid out in sections. Features are sorted into must-have, nice-to-have, and future columns and can be reordered by drag-and-drop. Use AI Edit to refine any section, add features, or update context you skipped during the questions. When the spec looks good, export it as a PRD or implementation plan to paste into your AI coding tool.

Tips

  • The more specific your initial description, the fewer clarifying questions you will get — a detailed prompt can cover most categories automatically.
  • You can click Skip & Generate at any time during the question flow. Skipped sections will be empty in the spec and can be filled in later using AI Edit.
  • Detailed depth is worth the extra 15 credits if you are building something with a real backend — the acceptance criteria and API routes save hours of back-and-forth with your coding tool.
  • The idea chips below the text box (Personal habit tracker, AI-powered journal app, and so on) append to whatever you have already typed, so you can use them as a starting point without losing your draft.
  • If generation fails you can hit Try again — credits are not re-deducted on a retry. If you want to abandon the session entirely, Cancel and refund credits returns everything you spent.
  • On the free tier you get one project slot. Delete that project to free the slot and try the flow again with a different idea.

Credits & plan

Generating a project costs 50 credits at Brief or Standard depth, or 65 credits at Detailed depth. Detailed depth is available on Plus and Pro plans only — free and Starter users will see it locked in the depth selector.

FAQ

How much does it cost to generate a project?

Brief and Standard depth both cost 50 credits. Detailed depth costs 65 credits and is available on Plus and Pro plans. The credit cost is shown in the interface before you click Continue.

Do I have to answer every question before I can generate?

No. You can click Skip & Generate at any point in the question flow, or Generate now from the end-of-round screen. Any sections you skipped will be empty in the spec, but you can fill them in later using AI Edit.

What is the difference between Brief, Standard, and Detailed depth?

Brief and Standard produce a complete spec with the same credit cost. Detailed adds testable acceptance criteria on must-have features, HTTP API routes on every navigation screen, and richer tech-stack and data-model detail. Detailed is a Plus and Pro feature.

What happens if generation fails?

You will see an error screen with two options: Try again (credits are not re-deducted on a retry) or Cancel and refund credits, which returns the full cost of the session to your account.

Can I edit the spec after it is generated?

Yes. Every section of the spec is editable. You can drag and drop features to reorder them, and use AI Edit to update any section or add new features at any time.

What does the extra round of questions do?

After the first batch of questions, Draftlytic may offer an optional additional round focused on categories with lower coverage. Each extra round has a small credit cost shown before you start it. You can skip extra rounds and generate immediately at any time.
